Crunchy Granola Bars

Keeping with the New Years theme of trying to be healthier and fitter, I decided it’s time to make granola bars. I love granola bars. I think they are the perfect snack. Healthy but just a bit indulgent. Win-win all round. Having made loads of different granola bar recipes over the last few years, I had hit on the perfect recipe last year. However, me being me, I lost the recipe. (Yes, I know. Its ridiculous. I’ve spent the better part of the last few months kicking myself.) Meanwhile Atul had been asking for these – only about a gazillion times. The only way to rectify the situation and regain my self-respect seemed that I puzzle out the recipe again.

Turkish Delight – A sweet little recipe

Ever since I’ve came back from Turkey I’ve been wanting to make Turkish Delight and Baklava. Since I had been scorning both for the longest time, predictably, it took Istanbul to take me down a peg or two and teach me otherwise. Read more

Easy does Yum 4 – Microwave potato chips and a creamy yogurt dip

I used to be crazy about potato chips. Not all but a particular variety. To be specific  the thin, almost transparent type that we used to get at the Delhi halwais. The variety you don’t get anymore. Infact a couple of years back, I bought 10 packs of chips from various shops in Mumbai (yes, I can get crazy like that) in my quest for the perfect chip..alas, to no avail. The fancy packaged ones never do it for me. And nor do the local ones anymore. The ones that I crave were really really thin, translucent and had oil bubbles trapped in it (yes..they were gross, greasy and utterly yummy), and NEVER flat. Instead these were all messily folded and ruffled up … As a kid I would go to birthday parties (this was the best place to find these) just to scarf these down in huge quantities (and I was still a reed thin kid…damn the injustice of it) and then at NID, I would buy and eat 250 gms worth of these every single day for a whole year (which is what caused me to put on those 10 kilos in 6 months). Ask my friend Kritika. She never lets me forget it.  Read more

Re-discovering apples – cake and fritters

The apple hamper

Anti clockwise, starting from bottom left: Cripps Pink, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji, Braeburn

To my great delight the folks at Washington Apple Commission sent me a nice apple hamper with seven distinct variety of apples. The hamper included apples in all variety of shapes and colours, packaged in a lovely box worthy of princely jewelery; and was a revelation to me. My guess is that I have probably eaten almost all of these at some point or the other.  Not being a great apple fan though, I never really paid enough attention. All I knew was that in general I don’t seem to like apples most of the times and the ones I do tend to be sweet, tart and also crisp. Read more
